JOB SUMMARY
The Accounting Manager is responsible for the overall operation of the Finance Department and is accountable for the development, implementation, management of all finance related policies, practices, procedures and systems.   Utilizing generally accepted accounting principles, insures on-going compliance with applicable state and federal laws and financial reporting requirements, analyzes financial information and prepares financial reports and statistics and makes recommendations for the efficient and effective financial operation of the corporation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Hires, trains, manages and develops subordinate staff, evaluates performance, recommends adjustment in pay and, when necessary takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Manages and directs all accounting functions to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principals including the development and implementation of accounting and accounting control procedures.
  • Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare entries to accounts such as general ledger accounts, documenting business transactions.
  • Implements and maintains timely, accurate and effective utilization of the organizations computer based accounting software system.
  • Analyzes financial information detailing assets, liabilities and capital and prepares balance sheet, profit and loss statement and other reports to summarize current and projected company financial position. Assists in the development and on-going monitoring of budgets.
  • Audits contracts, insurance policies, invoices and receipts and prepares reports to substantiate individual transactions prior to settlement.
  • Prepares timely reports for outside organizations including state and federal government agencies in compliance with legal mandates and contractual obligations.
  • Performs cash flow analysis, maintains accurate and up-to-date listing of all outstanding obligations, as well as projected liabilities, and their due dates and provides regularly scheduled monthly, quarterly and annual reports and, upon request, provides ad-hoc reports to assist management in controlling and directing use of its financial assets.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principals (GAAP).
  • Strong analytical and accounting skills including accounting, budgeting and cost control principles.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections.
  • Ability to efficiently organize and prioritize workflow as well as to coordinate and direct the work of others.
  • Significant experience and skill the in the creation and use of Excel spreadsheets as well as in the use of other MS Office programs.
  • Knowledge of major accounting software packages for both general ledger and statutory accounting.
  • Effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline driven environment.
  • Superior work habits including a willingness to work the hours necessary to complete assigned work and projects, especially when important deadlines cause greater than normal departmental pressure.
  • Ability to work independently as well as an integral part of a team and willingly take on new tasks.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license, state minimum levels of auto insurance, a clean driving record, the ability to be covered by the agencies insurance carrier and reliable transportation.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business with an emphasis in accounting from an accredited college or university is required.  A minimum of five years of progressively responsible and diverse accounting experience in a non-profit organization, including two or more years of successful experience in managing others preferred.  Experience in fund accounting is essential.  Prior experience in the implementation and operation of financial accounting software systems is desirable.


ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally performed in an environmentally controlled setting.  Employees are regularly required to sit; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate office equipment including keyboards and to reach with hands and arms.  Occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel or bend and may lift up to 25 pounds.
